Double consonants need to be pronounced. As soon as you pronounce a dual consonant, just expand the sound while holding the breath for a moment:

Double consonants are an extremely important because they identify words. E.g. "rosa" (pink) "rossa" (red).

Certain words have actually a dual consonant only for the "sake the the music" (you recognize Italian language is really musical). This happens typically when:

two words combine (e.g. Chi + sa = chissà). Some of these words are: sebbene, fabbisogno, seppure, dammi, fammi, dimmi... words start with "sopra, contro": soprattutto, sopralluogo, soprannome, sopravvivere, contraddire... Words begin with the prepositions "a, da, fra, su": allo, addosso, davvero, dapprima, frattanto... Words start with the conjunctions "e, o, né": eppure, oppure, nemmeno, neppure... ...

Words that perform NOT require a double consonant are:

finishing with "zione" (azione, meditazione, lezione...) beginning with "intra" (intravedere, intramuscolo...)
