My husband and I created this DIY crown molding to provide the look of wide, custom style woodwork. Just done!
Hey friends! I’m ultimately sharing the crown molding mine husband and I mounted in our foyer recently.Well, we freshly finished the anyway. Haha
It was simply one much more thing ~ above the list of makeovers/remodels roughly here! So, yep, it got started, climate stalled, then lastly finished. It wasn’t a large job, we just had about 5 (or 50) other ones going at the exact same time. ;)
DIY Crown Molding
I’m really happy with just how this turned out.I adore the wide, deep look as it provides it look a little more custom.

This room formerly did not have crown in it.
Move in day….
But it did have actually wallpaper and border about the top! That’s the old tile floor that we removed and also replaced v vinyl tiles….which us have due to the fact that replaced with beautiful wood-look laminate flooring. (by the way, we originally removed the ceramic tile since there were loads of cracked pieces when we moved in)Can you believe there was also a door in that little opening there??We took that sucker turn off the work we moved in! lol
Here that is after I eliminated all the wallpaper and border. Ugh, that was a job! This house had wallpaper in every room, simply about.
We hadn’t replaced any type of of the internal doors/knobs yet, though.(Aw, sorry, ns can’t aid myself….memories!! mine old “mommy” van, from once my babies were in reality babies, is parked the end front!)
How about this view??
Yikes!! Haha!!It certain looks various now, huh? (aww, much more memories, there’s my tiny buddy in the bottom left corner of the photo!)
And just how it looked in ~ one point after….
So, us installed new doors, new floors, brand-new paint, new light fixture and also wainscoting…but we never acquired to the crown molding in that room, till now.
Here’s what us used:re-used the old crown we took down from the dining room/morning room (we put up new, more comprehensive trim and reworked the corners in there)paint (I used Sherwin Williams Extra White on all trim, doors, etc, in Eggshell finish)wood fillercaulk
This might not be the regular way to do this however this is the mechanism my hubby come up through to execute it.And it appeared to occupational out perfectly!Especially nice, us re-used the old crown us took down from the dining room. (it acquired used because that the “behind the scenes” portion)
It’s quite basic, actually.
He nailed the old crown mold pieces to the ceiling, upside down, therefore the edge (that is naturally found on crown molding) was at the front. The brand-new piece the crown mold has an angle as well. Once turned upside down prefer that, the two fit directly together. Type of yin and yang. :)He climate nailed the brand-new crown mold to the old, i beg your pardon is organized secure by being attached come the ceiling.
The little cuts the door casing in in between were usually there as spacers. So…the brand-new piece that crown mold was nailed at the top, into the re-used crown the was attached come the ceiling. It was likewise positioned, and then nailed, about 1/4 – 1/2 customs over height of the door casing that was attached come the wall surface at the bottom.
I recognize that might be confusing for this reason I developed a comprehensive photograph to describe everything.
All nailed and ready because that filler, caulk and paint! (caulk is mine bff ;) caulk makes whatever beautiful! )
I’m sorry i didn’t gain to take much more photos the the yes, really “doing” that this DIY crown molding project, yet like ns said, we were life in total chaos in ~ the time.A full kitchen remodel underway as well as instead of the flooring in the whole downstairs. And repainting walls, ceilings and also every single door and also piece of trim, wall treatment in the downstairs.Yep, every at the same time. So, us were simply whizzing through, make the efforts to gain it every done and store our sanity!! lol
But there’s yes, really not much to this project. It’s a pretty basic one.Just follow the photo above and you’ve got it.
Seriously, caulk, y’all…..caulk… finishes everything up for this reason nicely. :) Don’t skip the step!Seal every single seam, because that a smooth look.
Here’s exactly how we finished turn off the end on every side the the stairs….
And on the various other side that the wall surface going up the stairs.
And full shot that the foyer, finished….
I just love what it adds to this space. Doesn’t the look so lot different? It look at so much nicer and finished with the brand-new DIY crown molding done.
